A dog owner living in the state of Texas received the biggest shock of her life when her Dalmatian, Luna, gave birth to an absurd amount of puppies!
Luna went into labor around midnight one Thursday, and she was able to give birth to her first five puppies right there at home. However, her labor stopped abruptly around 7:00 a.m. the next day, prompting her owner to contact the Fredericksburg Veterinary Center.
Because of the rarity of reproductive complications in larger dog breeds, veterinarian Brittni Turner then advised the dog owner to bring Luna to the clinic as soon as possible.
As soon as Luna arrived at the Fredericksburg Veterinary Clinic, she was rushed into surgery so that the veterinarians could assist with the birth of her sixth puppy. Veterinarians were astounded to discover the number of puppies remaining in gestation upon closer scrutiny.
11 more puppies were born, much to the staff’s and Luna’s owner’s surprise. They had difficulty keeping track of the total number!
Luna gave birth to a total of 16 puppies. The first five were born spontaneously, while the following 11 needed to be delivered via C-section.
The Fredericksburg Veterinary Center posted pictures of Luna and her puppies on their Facebook page and described the delivery of Luna’s puppies as “all hands on deck,” with the owner and receptionists assisting in the births.
The surgery was a success, as the mother and all 16 of her puppies recovered without incident. Luna fell short of the world record for having the largest litter of Dalmatians by three puppies. Melody, an Australian Dalmatian, gave birth to 19 puppies in 2019 and now holds the record for the largest litter.
Good job to all who helped Luna and her puppies! We’re wishing Luna and her pups the best!
