A man named Danny Spanks works at A Safefurr Place Animal Rescue. One day, he was on the outskirts of Bakersfield, California, assisting another rescue organization in locating an abandoned dog, when he saw a tiny dog dart across the road in front of him.
He quickly stopped what he was doing and attempted to find the dog and help it. He believed it would be simple, but he was mistaken.
The rescuer went to his car to retrieve hot dogs and a leash. When he turned around, though, the dog was gone. It strayed deep into a private truck yard and vanished entirely.
Danny repeatedly returned to the same location, but the dog was no longer around. He anticipated the worst. He believed he had lost his lone opportunity to help the animal.
After four weeks, Danny went to capture another stray. He set up the trap, but the dog refused to cooperate and fled.
The rescuer then realized he wasn’t too far from the location where he noticed the small dog and decided to pay the area a visit.
Danny soon observed a dog. However, it was not the same dog he had seen a month prior. He attempted to befriend it, but, like the other dog, it fled and vanished in the truck yard.
Danny believed the mission would remain incomplete like before until he heard a noise inside the yard. In addition to hearing the dog bark, he also heard a man’s voice. Danny yelled at him and asked if it was a stray, to which the man responded affirmatively.
Greg Flores, the trucker, agreed to meet Danny at the front gate. The little scruffy dog and another dog followed him. Danny was surprised to see the same dog he failed to save a month prior.
Greg named the canines Mahlo and Scrappy. He wanted a family for them and knew that Danny could help them find one. Therefore, he agreed to allow the rescuer to take the animals.
Danny fostered Mahlo and Scrappy until the Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society could accommodate them. They did admirably in their new environment. And shortly thereafter, both dogs found their forever homes.
