Most dogs act overly cautious around people they haven’t met before. They would try to avoid them, bark at them, or even try and chase them away to protect themselves and their families. This is why it’s common to see dogs acting aggressively whenever a courier comes near them. Dogs can sense when a courier truck or van is approaching and will start acting weird to defend their home from the would-be culprit.
Dogs will defend their home and family members with their lives. If anyone they don’t know approaches their territory, they will do whatever they can to fend off the intruder. This is why dogs usually mistake a courier or even a sanitary department employee as their mortal enemies. These people keep coming back to do their job and dogs think that they’re always successful in chasing them away.
However, the relationship between dogs and service personnel doesn’t have to be aggressive. We can prevent our dogs from developing this behavior or even correct it if we socialize them. It’s even possible to teach our dogs to make friends with people they don’t know.
A great example is a Golden Retriever named Shelby. Shelby’s human, Joshua Byrne, happened to be observing Shelby who was out in the front yard. He noticed that whenever the garbage truck is nearby, Shelby’s behavior starts changing. He becomes very excited and starts wagging his tail nonstop and stares in the direction where the garbage truck is coming from.
Shelby almost caused Joshua to panic when the garbage truck pulled over next to Joshua’s house to collect the garbage. Shelby ran toward the garbage collector at full speed and Joshua thought that his dog was about to attack the garbage collector. However, he soon realized that there was absolutely nothing to be concerned about.
It turns out that the garbage collector and Shelby are good friends. Shelby stopped a few feet away from the garbage collector and waited for something to happen. The garbage collector didn’t seem to be surprised and was actually happy to see Shelby. He stopped what he was doing, gave Shelby a big hug, and played with him for a few minutes.
Joshua soon found out that this was Shelby’s routine during garbage collection day. Shelby actually became friends with the garbage collector and would always look forward to garbage collection day to play with his friend. Here’s a heartwarming video showing the adorable friendship between Shelby and the garbage collector.
