Some dogs can become too traumatized, and they tend to shut down when that happens. Even when they are taken to a shelter where rescuers show them some love and care, they can’t fully process their situation. Most of the time, they never learn how to be loved, so they can’t return it.
When Piper was brought to a local shelter after being abandoned by her previous owners, she refused to acknowledge the humans around her. She didn’t get aggressive, but the brown pooch would ignore anyone that tried to interact with her.
A foster home
Piper kept cowering in every corner that she could find. Even when the shelter staff took her out of her tiny room, she would find the nearest nook and pretend that she was invisible. The workers got worried that the shelter life was not for her. So they took to social media to go and ask if anyone was willing to adopt or foster her.
Angela Lemcke-NewMyer, a frequent foster volunteer, living in St. Louis, Missouri, quickly offered her home. The very next day, she went to pick up the scared dog. The shelter staff had to carry Piper out as she refused to budge. On the way to Angela’s vehicle, the dog stopped several times as she reluctantly followed her new foster mom.
Foster fail
Once Piper was inside Angela’s house, the pup quickly darted to the bathroom and crouched in one corner. To help make the frightened pooch feel welcome, the kind foster mom brought her own dogs in and introduced them to one another. Barely an hour later, Piper was already in the yard, happily playing with the other canines.
Although Piper seemed to come out of her shell, it took a month before she fully trusted her foster mom. But once she did, the dog showed how loving she was.
Piper would frequently ask for cuddles and belly rubs and was very sweet to the humans around her. Angela and her partner fell in love with her, and they decided to adopt Piper permanently.
